Consequences of Lying To God!

"But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. Acts 5:1-5

In this passage, we encounter the story of "Ananias and Sapphira," which serves as a powerful illustration of hypocrisy within the Christian community. These two individuals pretended to be more spiritually devoted than they truly were in order to impress others. Although it was not inherently wrong for them to keep a portion of the money from selling their property, their mistake was in falsely claiming that they were donating the full amount to the Lord, which was a lie. Their deeper transgression lay in their selfish spiritual hypocrisy. Ananias and Sapphira were not obligated by God to sell their possessions; they chose to do so themselves and then deceitfully withheld part of the proceeds while misrepresenting their actions to the apostles.

The significance of the Holy Spirit is emphasized in this narrative, as Peter accuses Ananias of lying not just to the apostles but to the Holy Spirit and ultimately to God. This underscores the concept of the Trinity – God in Three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Ananias deceived not only the church but also the Holy Spirit dwelling within, endangering himself by lying to a divine entity. This contrasted sharply with the genuine generosity displayed by Barnabas. Ananias' sin was not merely in keeping back part of the money but in his deceitful behavior. Lying to fellow humans differs greatly from lying to God, as demonstrated in this tragic account.

Following Ananias' deceit, he promptly fell dead, leading to fear and solemnity within the congregation. The drastic consequences of hypocrisy and sin were evident, serving as a warning to all present and those who would hear about this divine judgment. While not every sin is met with such immediate punishment, this incident exemplifies God's role as a loving yet just deity. The swift judgment highlighted the severity of lying to God. Notably, Sapphira, Ananias' wife, faced the same fate as her husband after choosing to perpetuate the lie rather than confess the truth when given the chance.
